Hyper-scale is a set of practices and concepts that have emerged among some people when it comes to what is essential to scale to hundreds, millions, or even billions of users.
Somewhere out there, you can find a set of unicorns which have established infrastructure which are massive in their scale, with most of them having names that are familiar to all of you. There is LinkedIn with 100 million users, Pinterest with around 100 million users, Twitter with 320 million users, and Instagram with 400 million users. Then, there are companies which have taken things to the next level, with Google at 2.6 billon users, and of course, there is Facebook with 1.6 billion users.
Several of these companies actually build their very own software and designed the hardware they use. The main reason why they started it is because commercial products were not readily available which will let them create systems of scale which never went down, reliable, could serve their massive audience, and perform at its optimum best.
Hyper-scale is now moving towards today’s enterprises.
Right now, as a form of strategy, you can see how hyper-scale computing was starting to move away from only the unicorns, and going towards the bigger enterprise audience.
There are several international pizza chains which have introduced a bunch of mobile applications, and all of a sudden, there are tens of millions of brand new users come onto the network. There are customers that launch IoT initiatives which result in terabytes of data which flood into their infrastructure, and they believe that they can take most of the unicorn concepts, and make them industrialized, which means that these are made available to a larger enterprise market.
Holistic View of Datacenters
It is easy to believe that in the near future, you will be looking at datacenters holistically. You are going to look at all your physical resources in terms of real estate and facilities, the power equipment you use, down to the fire suppression equipment you are using. You are going to look at all of your IT resources when it comes to networking and servers, and storage, and everything else which represents the intelligence within that datacenter. Then, you will also be looking at your human resources.
How will you be able to think about all these things as a single continuous whole and bring them together by way of software automation and think of these as just one system instead of sets of disparate resources?

So, what are the things involved when you talk about hyper-scale systems? Before anything else, there is of course the economics of the system itself. If you will be scaling the enterprise architectures of today to hundreds of millions or even billions of users, existing economics will simply not work. How can you radically redefine infrastructure and datacenters’ economics to make this a reality? This is where hyper-scale comes in. A hyper-scale datacenter is expected to be autonomous, optimized, data-driven, scalable, and governed.
