The Obstacle is the way- Ryan Holiday
As one who has worked to overcome my own obstacles for several years, I wanted to read Ryan Holiday’s “The Obstacle Is the Way” in order to find out what lessons the book might offer that I could use in my daily efforts toward self-growth.
This is one of Ryan Holiday's better books. If you are new to stoicism then this would be a great starting place with relevant examples from the modern world. The one thing about stoicism that really fascinates me is that we practice Stoicism in many situations without actually realising that it is the same philosophy. Hence this book will feel very familiar in the examples that he mentions. It does not feel like some alien philosophy which is far removed from our lives. The Obstacle Is the Way is less a philosophy book about getting to the truth, and more about getting to opportunity.
We all face obstacles in our lives, what matters is how we perceive them and work with them to move on. "When we aim high, pressure and stress comes along for the ride," so we have to find ways of dealing with them, as well as the aspects of life that may blindside up with randomness.
I am glad that this book was written, which gives me some insight that I wouldn't have had about the inner workings of a business without it. The book has three key sections – Perception, Action, and Will – and in each of them Holiday applies a view of Stoicism to hypothetical or historical examples to show how something can work.
Thus this book is a must for anyone who want to raise their ordinary lives to a new level.
