Hooked- Nir Eyal
As I am interested in the topics of gamification, consumer motivation and influencing user behavior, Nir Ayal is a familiar name in the world of books and being a regular reader of Nir’s articles, I knew his book was good. The fact that it got almost perfect reviews on Amazon reinforced my belief and I was absolutely correct.
The main idea of Hooked is how to build Habit-Forming Products is the HOOK model canvas. Eyal says the hook is, “an experience designed to connect the user’s problem to your solution”, basically ‘hooks’ are what make user preferences. This experience includes four important parts- trigger, action, reward and investment.
Just thinking of the success companies such as Facebook and Google, that are illustrative of the Hook model, the book explores each of them to realize the developing a habit forming product is good for business with the four elements of the Hooked model in great details and through plenty of meaningful examples. Nir Eyar masterfully weaves his insights of technology, business and psychology into his four-fold model, which explains how to create habit-forming products. Hooked is an excellent (short) book on the use of psychology in product design. As technology becomes increasingly available to entrepreneurs of all backgrounds, design has become just as important as engineering. Correspondingly, all entrepreneurs should have a good understanding of the principals behind building habit-forming products. Hence, it is an extremely valuable book for anyone building products designed to engage people frequently.
